Holy Overshadowing
I recall my grandmother telling me many times of how they would read Psalm 91 a lot during the second world war. It brought them immense comfort and hope. When the sirens would wail, one of her sisters would hide in the cupboard underneath the stairs. Others in the family would recite that Psalm aloud, until the immediate bombing danger had eased.
Psalm 91 says:
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
In recent years, British singer/ songwriter/ worship leader Graham Kendrick, has written the most beautiful song that describes that ‘overshadowing’ we all need.
I hope this song brings comfort for the times we are going through right now.
Here are the lyrics, and the link to listen further. https://youtu.be/fJWetk7zbGE
O spread Your wings of mercy over me
And guard my heart with true humility
No shadow of the darkness pressing in
Only the holy overshadowing
Underneath Your wings, overshadowing
No refuge will I seek but God alone
No hiding place save only at Your throne
Only the cross, the blood to wash my sin
Only the holy overshadowing
Underneath Your wings, overshadowing
You are my shield, and my glory
You are the lifter of my head
And though the storms may rage around me
I’ll be safe within
Beneath the holy overshadowing
No burden on my back too hard to bear
Only the easy load You bid me wear
Until these troubles pass, my heart will sing
Praise for the holy overshadowing
Underneath Your wings, overshadowing
